Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I am currently a fifth grade teacher at Willow Oaks Elementary School in Menlo Park, CA which serves the East Palo Alto community. I began teaching this class on February 1, after the previous two teachers left and none of the multitudes of substitutes would sign on for the remainder of the year. These children are so amazing and are so deserving of better. Not only are they economically and socially challenged, now they are even further behind in their education. Some of the challenges I have faced since being here are very basic, but are the most valuable. My students are in need of stability, knowing that someone loves them and won't leave, team building, a connection to their world, that they matter, that life is beautiful and that there is more outside of their world of unrest. When I came to Willow Oaks, I was under the impression that we had funding for this trip. We have come to realize that the funding left with one of the previous teachers. Now we are looking for other funding in a hurry. My trip dates are May 8 and 9. I am requesting funding to cover the expense of chartering a school bus and food. The actual trip cost per child is covered by the destination site. The class trip is to Vida Verde. The Vida Verde Nature Education overnight field trip, is specifically designed for at-risk youth of the San Francisco Bay Area. It provides students direct experience with nature, farming, ecology, cooking, and sustainable living. The program teaches these concepts through team building games and activities, sports activities, group meal preparation, nature hikes (both during the day and at night), camping in teepees, and campfire songs. In addition to this, the students travel to the near by ocean beach and tide pools to round out the nature education experience. It amazed me how many children at my school had never been in that type of natural environment, or that they had never seen the ocean! East Palo Alto is not that far away from the California coast. The California State Educational Standards in science require that fifth grade students learn about plant and animal structures and their functions, that the Earth is covered mostly by salt water from the ocean and fresh water from rivers, lakes, and underground sources, and that the ocean influences weather patterns. These standards also require investigation and experimentation with things in nature. The Vida Verde Nature Education program brings these standards to life in ways that are exciting and meaningful to students. This is truly a trip students will never forget!!! Please make this happen for my students! Thank you!
