Variables can be a very scary thing for kids. As soon as they see a letter in an equation their brains often shut down and they get overwhelmed. This DonorsChoose.org project would provide me with a full math unit on building their foundation understanding of variables so that the first time they see a letter in an equation, they respond with determination, excitement, and confidence.
The "Hands-On Equations" kit is a research-based approach to building algebraic thinking using manipulatives.
This approach will help kids take the abstract concept of variables and give them physical tools that they can manipulate to solve the problems.
This unit will be used year after year and will be shared with multiple classes! I have included dry-erase markers so that the materials that can only be used once can be laminated and drawn on with expo markers. I also included a Teacher Pay Teacher (TPT) gift card so that after we build the foundation of variables, we can instruct the kids further using games, worksheets, and other materials available on TPT.
