Hello. I am a fourth-grade teacher in a NYC public school. I have 32 fourth-graders coming from approximately 14 different ethnic backgrounds. The majority of the students in my class do not speak English at home, and many of my students are extremely weak in vocabulary, in part, because of the lack of exposure at home.
Vocabulary is such a fundamental area. For several years I have been doing a word-of-the-day exercise based on a cartoon. The students have to try and figure out the meaning of a new word using context clues. They then confirm the definition using a dictionary. Further challenges based on the word-of-the-day word are given throughout the week to reinforce the new words. The students absolutely love this daily lesson, and it has really helped improve their vocabulary skills. Improvement can be seen in their speech, their reading and their writing as well.
Unfortunately, our school is very tightly budgeted. Last year I purchased spiral notebooks for the students and we used photocopies and glue to build their vocabulary notebooks. This year I would like to place the word-of-the-day in a binder for each student. Binders would allow the students to add pages of vocabulary work relating to the words. It would mean they could group vocabulary pages and catorgize them. Binders would also help create a sense of importance around vocabulary and a sense of pride for the fourth graders as their notebooks get fatter!
Binders are very costly and even though the school loves the binder project idea, the school is unable to purchase them. I am asking for 32 heavy-duty binders for my class.
I have had very intelligent students who don't know what a dock is. Having a notebook where they keep pages showing picture associations along with the word-of-the-day words and other vocabulary games really helps my students retain vocabulary words. Vocabulary is a key to comprehension, and having a strong vocabulary can help improve standardized tests scores! Please help me to help my children!
Thank you.
