Vet $mart! Time is Money

Help me give my students a concrete understanding of common phrases: time is money and a fraction of the cost with a complete veterinary learning center in our classroom which will be used for years to come.

My Project

As a teacher for grades 3-5, I work with students at various developmental levels, from 3-year-olds to 9-year-olds. To meet these diverse needs, I want to transform a section of the classroom into "Vet $mart Learning Center" to teach financial literacy in a fun and effective way. Our classroom currently has plush animals and a small vet set with play medication bottles. I’ve successfully used these resources to teach place value up to the thousands place, with students showing mastery through quizzes and discussions. Building on this success, I believe expanding to a Vet $mart Learning Center will further enhance financial literacy lessons.

Students will role-play as veterinarians, receiving "payments" and applying math skills to real-world situations as they are paid for using their time wisely and learn to care for plush animals for a fraction of the cost as we transform our math center into a vet clinic, Vet $mart.

Students will engage in activities that teach essential financial concepts such as managing fractions of a dollar, time management, and budgeting.

Key components of the Vet $mart Learning Center will include:

Cash Register: Allows students to practice handling money, making change, and processing transactions, providing hands-on experience with financial operations.

Time Cards: To track earnings and illustrate the concept of "time is money."

Magnetic Boards: For monitoring expenses and tracking costs related to caring for plush animals.

Measuring Tools: To help with calculating the fractions of costs for veterinary care.

All these materials will be neatly organized in storage bins. For added fun, doctor lab coats will be used in our Vet $mart learning center. This interactive area of our classroom will make financial literacy engaging and memorable, helping students develop smart money habits and practical financial literacy skills in all areas of life.
