We were able to give each student a small taste and smell of Lunar New Year with fortune cookies, Panda Express coupons, and red candy. Students used potential energy, force, and magnetics to build a protection from the wolves in Little Red Riding Hood and the Little Pigs. Students read \"Cinderella\" and made an way for her to escape with magnetics that would not crumble like pumpkins. Students listened to \"What's the Matter Bear\" and then we made ice-cream floats to visualize and gas (from soda) solid (ice-cream) and liquid (Dr. Pepper and Coke). Students loved this! We also used circuits to turn the lights on for Jack to see as he was running away from the beanstalk and the Giant. The students learned so much from these fairy tales and STEM projects. Students really put together common characters, common problems and common solutions. Digger deeper in STEM students working on circuits said, \"Next time the power goes out we just put these together and make own light.\" Students are relating STEM to a bigger picture and solving community problems. Our next big project is a motor boat and wind boats. Students will be listening to FolkTalkes from Norway next week and creating Norwegian boats.
