This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
This project would benefit my 12th grade AP Statistics students and the 9th-grade students we share a room with! Our school building is full of hard-working students who are happy to be back in the school building, but who need support in working collaboratively. Our ninth-grade students spent much of middle school in hybrid or remote learning and our 12th-grade students haven't had a consistent school year since 9th grade!
My Project
As we transition from remote and hybrid learning, a goal of mine is to have my students up and out of their seats discussing problems verbally and through their written ideas. I picture durable dry erase boards all around the room where students can work in groups and put up their thinking as I walk around the room asking questions, offering feedback, and pointing them to the thinking of others around the room. I recently read Peter Liljedahl's book "Building a Thinking Classroom in Mathematics" and have tried some of his strategies using large post-it paper. While it still works, it is not sustainable, and since they are paper, the marks last forever. I want my students to see their work as rough drafts in edit mode where they can confidently write knowing that they can change their thinking as they discuss and discover!
