it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
At this time my classroom is very teacher centered and I am looking to engage my students in learning so they can become life long learners and thinkers. They are afraid to make mistakes and truly try to solve math problems. After reading Building Thinking Classrooms in Mathematics by Peter Liljedahl, I wanted to create a thinking classroom where students do not just mimic what I am doing on the board but truly engage in active learning and thinking. This would shift the classroom to student centered and the idea of giving students alternate ways of working on problems is something that seems doable. Using portable whiteboards to create a vertical classroom and a non permanent writing surface that can be easily erased as described in the book is my first step to creating this positive learning environment. The erasing allows them to take a risk with their ideas since they know they can erase them immediately. My students will be able to stand as they work and I can then move the students easily into random groups. The research shows that this type of classroom helps with student engagement and encourages thinking as they are changing their just sit at a desk. I am very excited to use these whiteboards as part of the first toolkit and step towards building my own thinking classroom.
