Vertical Learning for a Deeper Understanding of Collaboration
Help me give my students these Tabletop Magnetic Easel & Whiteboards to aid in our vertical learning time as we work toward collaborating together to achieve common goals!
Ninth graders are definitely unique - especially freshman on a "freshman-only campus." Thankfully they are not influenced either way by under- or upperclassmen. They are just beautifully freshman. But, unfortunately, sometimes the uniqueness can backfire. Collaboration is such a huge part of life, but so many students either don't want to work with others and do everything themselves, or have never been taught how to work with others cooperatively towards a common goal. This is where my classes and my style come in to play.
I tell my students, "No one makes any advancements - either personal or societal - by him/herself." Everyone must learn to work together towards common goals in and outside the workplace.
Life requires this. In my science classes I teach and allow students to discover how to collaborate and cooperate, and they continuously amaze me with their achievements!
My Project
Many students must be taught how to collaborate to achieve common goals. Knowing how to cooperate with others to produce a final product is a life skill that is learned best in a school or athletic setting. Vertical learning gets everyone in a group involved in the process and allows the teacher to have a 360 degree view of the entire class' thoughts and ideas.
These tabletop dry erase boards will enable my students to work together throughout a problem-solving process and allow me to see the whole class' understanding and ideas.
When students work at tables or desks, only they can see their degree of understanding or unique ideas. However, when groups of students work together on a vertical surface that allows for easy correction, the team is joined not only be the team members, but by the whole class and teacher. Good things are bound to happen when we work together!
