Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At the end of each year, I ask students to rank activities and experiences from our year, that were the most educational, meaningful, and memorable. Without rival, the activity they name first are our dissections. The ability to share a dissection experience will greatly help my students learn.

Our school is an extremely diverse school, full of Hispanic, Marshall Islanders, and other cultures.

Our school is also a Title I school, with a high percentage of families living in poverty, while qualifying for free or reduced meals. Any learning opportunities that extend the classroom, are highly valued and appreciated by these students. This project would allow a rare chance for these students to perform a vertebrate dissection.

My Project

The vertebrate dissection is the culminating activity of a study of the human body systems. After students have studied each of the major human systems, made a book to record their personal learning, and studied the dissection in detail, they will work in teams to dissect the vertebrate, log their dissection, complete a report, take and share pictures, and produce a product of learning to share with fellow students.

Many of our students have an interest in the medical field.

They have a natural interest in how the human body works, and would like to pursue a medical career through the Medical Academy, at our local high school. The opportunity to introduce biology, by performing a high level dissection, triggers their fascination even further, and gives them a realized hope, that they can and will continue their track toward helping others.
