With today's technological world, our lack of resources makes it quite difficult to keep up. Our current situation involves 22 students sharing two computers. While this has offered many teachable moments in sharing and patience, I feel my students deserve more access to technology.
My students are highly motivated by technology and the opportunities it provides.
They are always seeking new ways to improve their learning and understanding. Although Vermont may not be known for its diversity, students in our school come from all over the world. Our city has become a refugee resettlement area for families from Sudan, Nepal, Somalia and more. Our school's mission is "to provide opportunities for students to achieve their personal best, become responsible and productive citizens and embrace lifelong learning!" My goal is to be able to provide my students the tools they need to succeed in our global environment.
My Project
Skype has become a 21st century version of pen pals; allowing students face-to-face, real time communication with other people around the world. I have found this valuable resource helpful in introducing my second graders to different cultures they otherwise might not be exposed to. Thus far, my students in Vermont have Skyped with people in other parts of the United States, England, China, Canada and the Netherlands. Not only are students exposed to different cultures, but they are also learning about geography and the incredible power of technology. My students are highly engaged during our Skype lessons for many reasons. They are amazed at our ability to "fly" to locations of our Skype friends via Google Earth. They also thoroughly enjoy finding the school of our new friends in a location we have sometimes never heard of before.
Access to this netbook will enhance learning for my students in a variety of ways.
Technology is highly motivating, engaging and fun! The skills my students are learning through this 21st century tool will provide them with a solid foundation for their future. You could be an integral part of this process. Thank you for considering our Donors Choose project!
