This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a class of fabulous 4th graders. Our school is a Title I, neighborhood elementary school in North Philadelphia.

My students are enthusiastic, bilingual learners.

Our class uses a 50/50 model with half of the instruction in Spanish and half in English, so that they are able to develop as bilingual and biliterate global citizens. My goal is that they will use that knowledge in our class and in the future to be twice as powerful in improving themselves and their world.

My Project

The books requested in this project will help to grow our Spanish-language classroom library. I have prioritized ordering sets of books to grow options for our Spanish-language guided reading groups, at a variety of reading levels, since my students enter fourth grade with a wide range of abilities. I've also chosen some titles as single copies to use for read aloud and class discussions.

I have carefully selected titles with a preference towards choosing authentic Spanish language texts, written by children's authors who (like my students) are from a variety of Spanish speaking countries, or are bilingual authors from the U.S.

I have selected texts that complement existing curriculum, including science and social studies themes, like the water cycle (Había una vez una nube) and immigration (Nacer bailando, Alma y la isla), and books to support language arts genre studies, like folktales (El gallo de bodas, Juan Bobo busca trabajo) and persuasive writing (De carta en carta). I have also ordered many titles for students not yet reading on grade level. In this way, our classroom library will grow to support my bilingual learners.

Author Alma Flor Ada captures the importance of bilingualism in this excerpt from her poem "Bilingual":

“Because I am bilingual

I can read libros and books […]

And someday,

because I speak two languages,

I will be able to do twice as much

to help twice as many people

and be twice as good in what I do.”

It is my hope that these books will support my students to become lifelong bilingual readers.
