Velcro Will Complete Adapted Books For Special Needs Students

My students need books that are adapted to assist multi-modal learners so it appeals to all the senses. I use Velcro to make PECs to match or move pictures around the book.

My Students

My school consists of students from a very low socioeconomic class and most of the families are on welfare. A lot of our students are extremely below grade level in reading, writing and math. They complain about having to sleep on the floor or couch at home and that they don't even have their own bed or bedroom.

These students have moderate to severe cognitive, social and physical disabilities such as Autism, Down Syndrome, Treacher's Syndrome and Intellectual Disabilities.

They benefit from curriculum that is modified to suit their learning levels. They are sweet, kind, caring children that just need encouragement and love.

My Project

When my students have access to "adapted books" with modified text and tactile opportunities to move pictures and words around, they become more engaged in the book. With Velcro, I'm able to create books that are interactive and fun. I also create independent work folders where everything is manipulated with Velcro. Their comprehension level increases and they enjoy the books even more! Almost everything we use in our classroom requires Velcro to make it interactive for students.

I know Velcro seems like an unlikely need, but every Special Education teacher will tell you just how important it is to make books, visual schedules, and just about anything.
