My school is a Title I school in a suburb of Houston, Texas. My students are at least a year or more behind their grade level peers in reading. I work in small groups ranging from first to fourth grade every day. They have no confidence in themselves and don't have as many opportunities to read books on their level.
My students faces light up whenever I pull out a new book (which is almost every day)!
These are low income, high poverty families that need extra help so their child will be a successful reader! They have few books at home and parents that work long hours. Many different nationalities are represented at our school and in my groups.
I try to spice up my groups by introducing a new book everyday. . We read them at the table, laying on a blanket on the floor, outside for a reading picnic, to their classmates or at home. I meet with my groups 4-5 times a week so we are always in need of new literature. I send the new book home every night to share with their family. They bring them back and get a new book. Some of our books are well loved!
Using a variety of fiction and non-fiction books we learn and grow as readers and thinkers.
This helps the students build background knowledge and helps them understand the world around them! My goal is to help them realize their reading potential and continue to grow as a reader!
