Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Eighty-seven percent of our students receive free lunches. Many students come from single-parent, working-class, Spanish-speaking environments. Opportunities in abundance on the other side of town seem like a fantasy in our classroom. My students aren't vacationing; instead, they read or draw to travel. In art, we create the places they visit as we cover the elements and principles of art. This experience allows this ATPE art educator to introduce the masters as wells as contemporary artists.
This year, I am creating art lessons around masters like Giorgio Morandi, Pablo Picasso, and Vincent Van Gogh.
Students will create fairy tale self-portraits, collaborative cityscapes full of color, and a room filled with llamas in pajamas. My budget is limited and, therefore, these unexpected materials will inspire students to create compositions using collage and color in new and amazing interpretations.
This experience will turn the district art curriculum into jaw-dropping visual context. The students will document the visual remembrances of each artist, practice the artist's techniques and style, learning exciting unique ways to understand the world.
My Project
Traditionally, students have a limited palette of materials. These supplies offer colors not normally seen in our art room. Paper colors like Holiday Red and Turquoise are beautiful as background or extra special details. The black paper is extra large and, therefore, much more exciting to create an imaginary world.
The collage materials are textured specialty papers and specialized felt shapes not yet seen before in the art room.
Glitter crayons sparkle when the light hits them, making student creations vivid and exciting. Metallic crayons pop on black backgrounds as students attempt to try new techniques and color schemes. These materials offer transformation in the hands of the youngest and least inhibited artists.
