My Project
One of the major impacts from a patchwork of online and in-person learning is that somewhere along the line, students stopped reading. Screens replaced books in hands, videos replaced text, and so many of my students, when surveyed, say they don’t read for pleasure! I’d like to change this in my classroom by creating a Free-Voluntary-Reading library of Spanish books for students to read 10-15 minutes daily. I teach a mix of heritage, native Spanish-speakers, and English-speakers learning Spanish, but all can benefit from reading novels, stories, and non-fiction books in Spanish. According to Stephen Krashen, reading is the most effective and efficient way for students to acquire the vocabulary, grammar, and structures of a language. It’s also the most fun and the least amount of work.
