Our students are coming to class and eager to learn. They love music and performing. They love playing orchestral instruments. It is new and exciting to them. They take pride in playing in the school orchestra. It gives them increased self-esteem and self-worth.
Our students are in grades 9-12.
They are bright, young, responsible students who love to learn. They love music. Music is what keeps them motivated in school. Our school is a public high school with highly disadvantaged students. We have a 70% poverty rate. Most of our students could never afford to play in an orchestra or learn to play an orchestral instrument if it were not for the school orchestra program. Our school is situated in the midst of 5 federal housing projects. We care about our students and want to provide them with ample opportunities to succeed in school and in life.
My Project
Our students will use the 2 new full-sized violins to be able to play on them without having to share with others. Our students will learn to play quality orchestral literature at high levels of expertise. Our students will experience the pride of performing in concerts throughout the school year which include Winter Concert, Taste Of Kalihi Performance, Ala Moana Center Stage, Parade of Orchestras, and more.
It is a quickly growing program and we could really use two more full-sized violins to accommodate all of the students who would like to play in the school orchestra. Our students will learn more than just reading notes on a page. They will learn life skills of perseverance to task, aesthetic appreciation for beauty around them, diligence, responsibility, team work, and more.
Donations to this project will be life-changing for our students.
Most of them come from highly disadvantaged homes. They would never have the opportunity to play orchestral music if it were not for the school orchestra program. As in the words of the world-famous Venezualan el sistema program founder, Dr. Jose Antonio Abreu--"physical poverty can be overcome by spiritual richness." We'd like to provide that to as many of our students as possible.
