Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I see 50 pre K-6th graders in our school district and work on many speech, language, and social skills with them.

My students are diverse, interesting and kind.

Most are English Language Learners, and come from languages and places that span the globe.

They work hard to further their speech and language development. My school is in a neighborhood with high poverty, but is a great place to learn. The administrators, teachers and support staff are very dedicated to their students' education.

My Project

In order to adequately serve the students on my caseload, I need to have a wide range of general knowledge about a multitude of disorders. These two webinars will help me to expand my skills to include disorders like selective mutism that I don’t see every day. I currently have a student with selective mutism who does not talk at school, and has a suspected language disorder. I want to serve her the best I can, but I do not currently possess the right skills.

I also have a student who presents worth excessive echolalia, which is a language characteristic that people on the Autism Spectrum can present with.

Echolalia causes him to repeat what people say instead of generating his own spontaneous language. I have worked with him for a year and have exhausted the strategies that I know to help this student make progress. I feel inadequate in my ability to support his language development without new ideas.

Currently, I don’t feel like I possess adequate skills to serve students with these less common disorders. In order to best meet their needs, I am seeking professional development opportunities to build upon my current skills.
