Vaccinating Against Racism

I need 120 copies of the book Stamped! to provide one for every teacher and staff member at my school.

My Students

We are a metro Title 1 school with a growing reputation for both sports and academics. Representing over 40 countries, our students come in with little English or able to take on our AP, STEM or International Baccalaureate courses.

The school library has pockets of comfy seating, computers, books, graphic novels and magazines to provide the biggest classroom in the building.

On average, over 50 students come to the library on individual passes. On average, 3 classes a day reserve space in the library. This is the place to go to for support and learning.

My Project

After listening to Dr. Kendi and Jason Reynolds speak on their amazing book, Stamped, I realized that I need to provide this information to my school. Rather than start with a school-wide initiative, though, I first need to engage with my teachers and staff.

According to Jason Reynolds, racism can act like a virus, and understanding material like Stamped creates a vaccine to help overcome the virus.

Lesson plans will be developed from this group book discussion. Specifically, students will learn about the history of words, review and research materials, understand the basis of charts and numbers (mathematics), and understand the politics of the based on these concepts. This project crosses different curriculum. I believe that by sharing this book and creating a professional development in the school around it, we can support our students better.
