Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

How do you motivate grade school kids to read? We use a site called Accelerated Reader. It helps us track how many books kids read at home, so we can reward those who are making most progress. Those kids go to monthly parties, which they love. Last year, thanks to AR, kids read 300% more books!

Did someone say parties?

What kind of parties? Some recent examples: 1) 'Vamos ao Brazil' - with soccer penalties, Brazilian dancing + food 2) 'Trash into Treasure' - creating artwork from trash 3) 'Wrestlefest' - featuring a demo given by a local high school wrestling club 4) 'Holiday Hullaballoo' - Hanukkah, Kwanzaa + Xmas songs and treats. You get the idea. Fun stuff if you are in 3rd - 5th grade. The parties cost next to nothing, by the way, thanks to our amazing local volunteers. Why do all this? Because our kids desperately need to be encouraged to read. They live in a high poverty area (over 85% receive free or reduced lunch). 27% of our students are special needs children, bused to our campus from all over the city. Over 3/4 of their parents don't speak English. Our moms and dads work long hours in hotels and restaurants here in south Florida. They don't have the time, the money, or the linguistic skills to make their kids into great readers.

My Project

Here's how Accelerated Reader works. Kids take a 10-minute online reading test. Based on their reading level, they are given individualized reading targets for the coming month. The kids check books out from our library. When they finish a book, they take a 5-minute quiz about it on the AR website. The site tracks how many books the kids are reading, and it tracks the difficulty level of the books being read as well. That way, we monitor the kids' reading progress. The kids who are meeting their reading goals get to attend our monthly parties. There are 3 beautiful aspects to this system. First, the kids love the parties, and they come to love the books, which is the whole point of the exercise. Second, the reading targets are individualized. Nobody is competing against anybody else. Poor readers, so-so readers, good readers - all go to the parties if they meet their goals. Third, the kids choose what they read about: math, literature, science, sport....it's up to them!

Accelerated Reader is used in thousands of schools up and down the country.

Why? Because it works wonders. But is not free. It will cost us to renew our AR subscription through 2015. Our school isn't affluent, and we would really appreciate your help. Think of the cost as divided among all the kids each year (the subscription is for 300 kids, in grades 1-5). Then think of the kids hitting the library shelves, bursting with pride when they meet their reading goals. Reading went up 300% last year, all thanks to AR.
