This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I am an Algebra 2 Instructor at the Small School of the Arts in Chicago, IL. I want all of my students to be successful in mathematics.
I have noticed that when my students struggle in class, they struggle with arithmetic as opposed to Algebra. When it comes time to solve a problem my students can work out the processes and then falter with adding, subtracting, and multiplying integers. In order to combat this problem I allow my students to use calculators in class. My students, however, are unable to afford the calculators that they need. I am therefore writing this proposal for a class set of calculators so that all of my students will be able to succeed in class even if they did not master the prerequisite arithmetic skills.
