This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach about 150 middle school students, science - a subject that all of us deserve to have because it explains most of the things that we observe on a daily basis in the natural and social world. Although we deserve this subject knowledge, the reality is that students are not always offerred this opportunity. My students have never had the opportunity to take a science class before this year, and because it's not the reading or math class they are used to, they are struggling to recognize that it is a very real subject that can help them better understand the natural world.
In my classroom, students are learning about various sciences - biology, chemistry, physics - as well as learning how to better navigate the community and the world in which they live in.
Despite never having a science class before, my kids stay curious by asking questions, and persevere as they search for their answers.
With these Chromebooks, my students will finally be able to find the answers to their scientific questions, explore scientific reactions and experiments through a brand new perspective, AND express their understanding of the content in a more accessible way. Considering that my students have not been taught science before, they ask so many amazing questions, which is the first step in the scientific method. These questions are often left unanswered because they don't have the resources to conduct proper research. These Chromebooks will allow them to further their journey through the scientific method so that they can truly gather information, make hypotheses, conduct their own experiments, and later on record and share their results.
By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase their investment into science, you will ultimately help build these important research and modeling skills that they can carry with them in their future academic courses and even future careers.
