My seventh and eighth grade students in the Journalism class write, illustrate, photograph, edit, and layout the school newspaper. Using three old computers, the students type their stories and print the text and photos. The layout is done the old-fashioned way: grid sheets, scissors, rulers, and glue. During the four years that I have taught the class, the kids at this middle school have learned that their words can make change happen right before their eyes. For many of the students, the school newspaper is the one place where they shine. The class includes children from the regular, the "gifted and talented" and the special education programs. The students must apply to be in the class and show an interest in committing themselves not only to writing, but to team work. I have watched students who are apathetic about learning light up when they've completed a successful interview or received a response from a local expert. However, this class depends on help from the community. With just three computers and a 48 minute class period, it is impossible for each of my 22 students to get even a weekly turn typing or creating graphs. In addition, only one of these computers can handle photographs and Photoshop, which we use to edit the pictures. When the print deadline approaches, we need more than one student working on the photos--but we do not have the equipment. With another computer, the children will have more opportunities to work on their assignments, and they will be able to print an additional issue of the newspaper. My middle school is made up of about 1400 students who come from all over the city. Because many of these students do not have computers at home, I make the Journalism computers available to those children during lunch for research and typing. With your assistance, more of my students will be able to use computers to put their voices in the school newspaper. Seeing how beautiful their words look on the printed page, they are inspired to write again--even if it means revising and editing over and over. The day these students deliver the newspaper to the school's homerooms is the pay off: they observe the sudden silence in each room as 35 students eagerly read a publication that truly belongs to them.
