Our class is a group of diverse learners from various backgrounds. When we teach them, we think of them as a whole person and work our best to meet all of their social-emotional, behavioral, communicative, and academic needs.
My students are part of an inclusive community.
This means that within each classroom, there are students who are working below, at, and above grade level, as well as students who have mild to moderate disabilities and a variety of sensory needs. All students are included in the classroom community all day and are not pulled out to receive services.
My Project
Due to the diversity of our classroom community, we use technology every day, multiple times a day. Some of our students use iPads in order to complete assignments in all subject areas.
Students who struggle with the physical act of writing are much more successful using applications like Explain Everything, Adobe Fill and Sign, or Key Note in conjunction with a predictive keyboard.
Students who struggle to read are able to access our school-adopted curriculum for both math and language arts through ebooks. They are able to follow along as the text gets highlighted and the text is read aloud. This provides more independence during times where struggling readers are expected to read grade level texts silently. In addition, it aids in supporting comprehension skills by allowing these readers to be exposed to the text multiple times.
Not only will students make use of these iPads, but also the paraprofessionals who support our students in the classroom. They are able to access Class Dojo as part of our positive behavior support system; they are able give points to students who earn them by being on task during assignments, working cooperatively, and participating in class discussions.
