I would like 30 student calculators and one overhead calculator. We use calculators for working on mental math strategies, understanding place value, and other lessons within the second grade math curriculum. The use of this technology during the math lessons increases excitement in the classroom. Being able to incorporate calculators into the curriculum adds excitement to the learning of certain skills in math. Some sample activities that the students might be able to use the calculators for include, but are not limited to: 1. Place Value: Having the children figure out how to add certain amounts to the identified number. An example would be: change 200 to 230. The students then have to figure out which place needs to change and by how much using their calculator. 2. Multiplication: As the students begin to understand how multiplication works, they can work with repeated addition using the calculators. This would then be transferred into understanding multiplication. 3. Basic Fact Practice: The students can work in pairs with a particular fact that I choose. They have a race to see if the person with the calculator or the person using mental math can solve it the quickest. This encourages the use of mental math, which will help the students think quicker with basic facts. I teach second grade at North Kenwood/Oakland Charter School on the south side of Chicago. I have 26 enthusiastic students that love working with words and learning about new words on a daily basis. In order for this opportunity to work in my classroom, I would need 30 student calculators and one teacher overhead calculator. This would allow enough calculators for each student to have their own. I want my students to have calculators to use in the classroom, so when we are working on specific units in math, each child will have the opportunity to have their own calculator to use. This will allow us to take advantage of the learning time available to us! We look forward to using our calculators to solve problems and increase our understanding of mental math strategies!
