Using Tech in Therapy

Help me give my students an iPad to use in their school counseling sessions.

My Project

I work with affectionate and loving elementary school students. Most of my students have a diagnosis of autism and participate in counseling services to support the development of their social and emotional regulation skills.

Students will be using the iPad to participate in session activities that review conflict resolution and problem-solving skills, engage in mindfulness activities to support executive functioning, and practice deep breathing and grounding exercises as coping strategies.

Students who are shy or anxious often feel more comfortable trying out these skills with the support of an iPad before real-life situations with a peer or another adult. This will help students build their sense of mastery of the skill and support them in transferring the skills to the classroom. There are so many amazing apps that help students to label and identify feelings, sustain attention to a given task, develop flexible thinking, consider other perspectives, and visualize coping skills. An iPad would be an invaluable tool to allow my students to explore different social scenarios and practice social-emotional learning skills in a safe setting.
