Using STEM & PBL to Serve the Unsheltered Homeless Community
Help me give my students the opportunity to create the Winter Survival Bags they've thoughtfully and lovingly designed for people in the Unsheltered Homeless Community meet the challenges they face on the cold, Winter streets in our area.
Our PBL (Project Based Learning) Students are working on a STEM/ Service Project to help people in the Unsheltered Homeless Community in Greater Cincinnati/ NKY survive the frigid Winter conditions on our local area streets.
I have an amazing group of students who're not only incredibly committed to helping the unsheltered homeless people in our area, but they're also talking about how they'd like to share what they're learning with others so they can make a difference, too, by taking ideas to youth groups and creating on-line, How-To videos.
This kind of forward thinking, eagerness to combine the science, health and nutrition content they're learning with the empathy and concern for others they're developing is creating a learning experience they'll take forward in their lives.
I need your help to get these terrific kids the supplies they need to help their neighbors in need. Thank you for your interest and support of my great kids and their wonderful project.
My Project
Using their customer needs and environmental situational analyses, our PBL students have created an integrated system of solutions to help people in the Unsheltered Homeless Community in our area face living conditions on the Winter streets in our area. In addition to the donations they're collecting with their Blankets, Coats & Boots Drive, the students have also designed and tested an Emergency Shelter Kit that protects people in freezing weather and a Winter Survival Bag that includes targeted food, hygiene, safety, and comfort items. We would greatly appreciate your help with getting the items needed to make up these shelter kits and survival bags. The other day, I asked one of my students what her goal was and she replied, "To save lives Mrs. K., because where there's life, there's hope!" I couldn't put it any better. That's what what your donations will be used to do. Thank you for helping my kids combine science and critical thinking with empathy and compassion to serve their neighbors in need.
