I am so grateful to greet 26 eager second graders each morning. These students come to school every day ready to learn.
At the beginning of the year, they created their own mission statement: Our mission is to learn more about reading, writing, math, science and social students.
We will be leaders by helping others, listening to everyone, taking turns and working together. We will always try to do our best work! I am so proud to say they are doing a fantastic job fulfilling their mission.
My Project
I would like to support my students’ mission by creating a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) work area with a variety of building materials. Materials such as Legos, Tinkertoy 30 model super building set, string, duct tape, craft sticks, balloons and straws will be used by students to make a creation to solve a problem. Students will also be engaged in STEM challenges to build the fastest race car, create the strongest pulley system, or build the strongest bridge.
This area would not only allow my students the opportunity to work on their academic skills, but also on the 7 habits (7 Habits of Happy Kids by Sean Covey) – be proactive, begin with the end in mind, put first things first, think win-win, seek first to understand than to be understood, synergize, and sharpen the saw.
In addition, these STEM activities may provide opportunities for students to learn from their mistakes, grow as learners, improve their critical thinking skills and become interested in STEM careers.
