My Students

My students thoroughly enjoy learning physics by "playing" with hands-on activities so I try and provide as many as possible in my classroom.

My students are a highly inquisitive and motivated group of 11th and 12th-grade physics students.

We are a comprehensive public charter high school located in Southern California. They are always motivated by real-world applications of what we are learning and I try as best I can to provide them with the opportunities to learn from hands-on activities.

My Project

The question I get daily from my students is "Mr. Mac can I charge my phone in class today?" I want them to experience first-hand learning about the power of the sun and allow them to experience how solar works with real-world examples and charging their phones is a perfect application of this concept.

I believe that hands-on science is the best way to teach concepts and using solar power to charge their cell phones will definitely help them understand the principles of energy transformations.

Students need to question, hypothesis, experiment, test, observe and analyze using real materials in order to comprehend what they are learning. I envision my students using this setup to design experiments based on computing how much power is needed to keep their cell phones charged.

Using these Solar Charger setups, my students will explore alternative, renewable energy sources by applying the technology directly to their personal daily cell phone charging needs.
