Using Rekenreks to Teach Number Sense With First Graders

My students need Rekenreks, a powerful manipulative to help students understand addition, subtraction and multiplication.

My Students

Addition and subtraction of numbers up to 100 can be tricky for students. The first grade students need a manipulative to see patterns in numbers, move beyond one-to-one counting and develop greater number sense.

First graders have a variety of abilities and needs, but all are working to develop better number sense and computation in addition and subtraction.

As I work with students, I am constantly trying to better understand their thinking behind the mathematics and to help them build the confidence and skills in basic number sense, problem solving and cooperative group work.

My Project

Rekenreks are a math manipulative tool. Each row is made of five red beads and five white beads. This allows students to make mental images of numbers. Using 5 and 10 as anchors for counting, adding and subtracting becomes more efficient than one-by-one counting. This tool provides learners with the visual models they need to discover number relationships and develop a variety of addition and subtraction strategies, including doubles plus or minus one, making tens, and compensation, thereby leading to automaticity of basic facts. The first graders have been using 20 bead rekenreks, but there are many students who could go beyond numbers to 20. I am ordering 100 bead racks to help these young students develop their understanding of numbers to 100.

This manipulative tool will provide a visual model and a tactile approach to students who need to build number sense.

I am requesting these wooden frames because they will last for multiple years and they are easy for students to use. This tool will be shared between myself and the 1st grade teachers. I plan to give other teachers training on how to use this tool so that they can implement it into their classroom as well.
