Using Percival Everett's James to Build Big Brains
Help me give my students a contemporary spin on a canonized text, with fully realized characters!
FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Bremer's classroom raised $479
This project is fully funded
My Project
James by Percival Everett is an excellent contemporary take on The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain. We'll use this text to work on traditional literary analysis skills, looking deeply at characterization, setting, and plot structure. We will also pair this book with excerpts from Huck Finn to practice our synthesis skills.
We will spend time analyzing how James/Jim is represented in both texts and how his narrative adds depth and nuance to the story line in each book, paying close attention to how Everett's James is portrayed as a complex, realistic, and fully rounded human.
I am excited to give my students an opportunity to read this text alongside excerpts of a canonized work.
