My Students

I teach eighth-grade students who are in many ways typical middle schoolers: playful, curious, and anxious about the world around them. Our school, is full of young people with varied backgrounds and interests, yet more than half of my students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

One of the things I enjoy most about my students is their capacity to care about each other and the world around them.

My students show me every day that they don't care how much I know, until they know how much I care about them. One of my great joys as a teacher is getting to know and care for my students.

My Project

Every day when students enter math class we stand in a Circle of Power and Respect, practice our hand raise signal the teacher uses to get everyone's attention, and recite our motto, "Today, I will use my power and respect to help myself and others!" Our motto unifies the class under a culture of doing what we can for the good of ourselves and others.

Students who do a great job of showing their power and respect in the classroom earn fun prizes that your contribution to this project will make possible!

We work hard, then it's time for play, the job of every child. This project is for fidget toys, candy and healthy snacks, ear buds to listen to music, and books teens enjoy.
