My students are curious young people interested in learning, but most do not enjoy reading. Although I teach math, I know that reading is key to their future academic success. Reading unlocks the power of the mind to imagine new worlds and explore abstract concepts and ideas, such as those found in math. Because many of my students are several grades behind in reading, they need every opportunity to read, even in math! The students I serve are a diverse community of learners who come together to safely experience and explore the world around them. Math is the perfect place to provide a text-rich environment suitable to boost students' numeracy AND literacy skills.
