My Project

Creating three-dimensional art requires planning, staying motivated, using design-based thinking, and having the confidence to experiment with new ideas and processes. In the past, I've noticed students tend to gravitate towards creating representational sculptures, but then their concern becomes focused on making forms that appear realistic according to what we see in real life. By having students focus on the concept of abstraction instead, they are encouraged to explore the use of design elements, proportion, modular shapes, and self-expression. Abstract art invites many forms of interpretation. Students must also problem-solve on how to attach shapes together.

Using railroad board, students will create abstract free-standing sculptures made of interlocking slotted shapes, and at the same time, learn to identify the relationship of art materials and tools, as a way to experience new creative techniques in art.

While the slotted sculpture is abstract, the overall design will need to demonstrate gesture, movement, and physical balance. As a compositional challenge, students design a shape that can be attached using interlocking slots, instead of relying on glue. From an engineering perspective, students also have to understand the depth of cuts made for the slots, how to position each shape, and the order in which to assemble the parts. The position of each shape determines how the sculpture will stand. Since these sculptures require multiple pieces, students will need determine the sizes for the shapes (geometric or organic) prior to construction. Railroad is easy to cut yet sturdy enough to be painted. Students will use acrylic paint and spray paint to add color. The hobby knives and scissors allow students to make detailed cuts. Creating abstract art asks students to think differently about the materials and meaning of their work.
