Visual art classes do not just foster creativity, but require students to become innovative thinkers, where they explore various solutions to problems. When creating ceramic artwork, students must continually evaluate their results through reflection and feedback. One of our ceramic projects focuses on the slab-construction process. The challenge of distance learning is ensuring all students have access to quality art materials so they can participate in class assignments, especially when it involves the design thinking process. Using rulers and paper, students design templates that are used to trace and cut out clay for building birdhouses. Each slab must be measured correctly so all parts fit together when constructed. To add color, students paint their works using acrylic paint. Paint palettes encourage students to mix colors to create unique designs. Paintbrushes of various sizes also encourage students to work carefully. This project will allow me to provide class sets of supplies so students can be confident with their work and design choices.
