This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
“The Parable of the Sower” by Octavia Butler is an important and timely piece of literature. It tells the story of a teenager fighting for a better future for herself and her community. My students, of which over 80% qualify for free or reduced lunch, need stories that inspire hope out of seemingly hopeless situations. A class set of graphic novel versions will allow all students to access this engaging text. Additional copies of the full novel will allow me to make copies of the text so they fully understand important themes, motifs, and characters.
Literacy is more important than ever with the fast changes and advances in technology.
My students are much more drawn to visual formats. That is why I want to use the graphic novel version to pull my students into the world Butler created. I believe my students need this story. Their post-Covid world is entirely different than anything us adults could have imagined for them. They will find strength and inspiration in the main character, 15-year old Lauren.
Through this novel reading I hope to help them answer the question: what does one do when everyone else has given up? How does one connect and motivate their community?
