Using GPS Devices for Real-Time Geo-Caching

My Students

I spent two hours with friends finding clues throughout Seattle by finding GPS coordinates. I want to build events like this into my courses to teach students about global positions.

My students are taking a computer applications course at a junior high.

They thoroughly enjoy using global 3d software and I would relish the opportunity for students to see what these way points mean in terms of their global position. Students could use this team building project and learn about their school.

My Project

I would like to use GPS devices to show students how to think spatially. Projects could include geographical caching events as well as scavenger hunts. Team building is a bonus for these students to enjoy working together and finding clues. I would also have students create their own scavenger hunts for items and share these with the class.

I think this project is so important because these students are really engaged in the topic of global awareness.

These GPS devices would give them a personal application as well as foster team work as students work together.
