Using Creativity to Survive Standardized Testing

My students need duct tape, cutting mats and rotary cutting tools to create duct tape masterpieces to relieve the stress of endless testing and let their creativity flow.

My Students

We are an inner-city classroom in a large, urban district in Ohio. I teach both math and science, but all we seem to have been doing for months is test-prep. We've endured hours of state testing and really need some off-paper time. We've been in tutoring and haven't had music or art, and we'd love to explore our creative sides.

My class contains some amazingly creative kids who are badly in need of materials to let those creative juices flow.

My Project

Standardized testing is common in public schools, but my ten-year-olds have spent hours upon hours taking standardized tests. When you total the months spent in extra tutoring sessions, district required tests, state required tests, and classroom exit quizzes we've completed this year, you can imagine how badly we need a break.

We still have six weeks of testing to go, and it would be a huge stress relief to spend some time after each testing session creating duct tape masterpieces.

The duct tape, cutting mats and rotary cutters will allow my students to safely learn a new skill which they can enjoy for many years to come. 4th grade is the perfect time to learn to create with duct tape. It teaches them to measure with a real-world application and to be precise in their measurements. The things they can create are endless.
