Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a fourth grade teacher at a school in Albuquerque, New Mexico. I teach at a Title I school, where most of the families are low income and qualify for free or reduced lunch. As a teacher I am constantly searching for the next best education practice from reading books, such as Teach Like a Pirate to EduProtcals, to searching out researched based professional development. I believe in teaching the whole child and giving them an education experience that makes learning meaningful.
As I look into the eyes of my 23 students, I know I must be present and ready to learn about them, so that I can make an impact on their education.
For the first time in my 14 years of teaching I will be servicing students who are English Language Learners. My students will enter the classroom with different cultural and community backgrounds. My students are energetic, kind, motivated, creative and critical thinkers each with their own unique stories of life.
My Project
Technology is now a big part of our everyday lives. In the past I worked in a classroom where students had one to one technology. Students could access the internet and Google Classroom at any time of the school day without problem. I want to bring this one to one technology to my present students and classroom. These Chromebooks will allow my students to research a given topic, work collaboratively on stories or papers in Google Drive, access content videos or assessment through Google Classroom, add extra practice to math using Prodigy or extra reading using the A to Z Reading program. Having access to technology without having to sign up for the computer lab gives my students an opportunity of the 21 Century computer skills at their finger tips.
Students need to be engaged and the traditional classroom is no longer a place where students are successful.
The environment in which my students learn is project based, where collaboration is key. Students need have access to technology, Chromebooks, to deepen their understanding of the world around them. I make learning meaningful by relating what my students already know to the current topic, while using technology to reach those goals. It is important to give all students access to enriching curriculum using the most current up to date technology.
