Using Chalk Markers to Communicate in Science

Help me give my students group sets of chalk markers for writing, diagramming, and presenting from our table tops.

My Students

The majority of my students are in accelerated or advanced courses and are ready to move beyond the basics. We are in a suburban neighborhood that is very supportive of our school. Our school is very competitive, and utilizes all of its resources to make learning experiences for our students fun and rigorous.

Even though my students are high achievers, my school does not receive a lot of extra, categorical funding.

This means that in order to provide many of the high level, costly experiences, I have to utilize my resources to locate additional funding. My students ask many questions that can only be answered with current research. My students love to learn. They are curious and smart. They challenge me everyday to stay current in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields.

My Project

The sets of chalk markers will be used to expand our abillity to analyze, synthesize and communicate information to each other. My students tables are arranged so that they often work in groups. Working together to diagram a scientific process, demonstrate understanding of broad concepts, create concept maps, or add details to a dynamic presentation, the students will use different colors of chalk markers. The neon chalk markers stand out on the black background of the tables. My students will use the chalk markers on the black tables, instead of whiteboards, to present information to other groups.

By having a set of chalk markers, my students will be able to better demonstrate their understanding of difficult content in a collaborative format.

The students will be able to demonstrate understanding using diagrams, manipulatives, or graphic organizers. As one group completes the task in one color, other groups will be able to add and/or comment in a different color giving immediate written feedback. Processes can be diagrammed using different colors to emphasize certain parts. Portions of diagrams, such as cell membranes, can be drawn with the chalk markers, then students will be able to add dynamic parts using paper, clay, or other art materials. Students will be able to create stop motion videos of processes, such as mitosis, using the markers and a few art supplies.
