My Project

I was sitting in an IEP yesterday, listening to the Occupational Therapist talk about a book she was using with a student on the spectrum - Soda Pop Head. It's a book about a little boy named Lester who is pretty happy most of the time, but when things seem to be unfair his ears gets hot, his face turns red and he blows his top! His dad teaches him to control his anger before "his fizz takes control". I thought it was such a fun way to teach kids about their feelings and what to do when they are mad. I looked the book up right away. In doing so, I found that there were a number of books written by the same author that would be beneficial to my students.

With each title I read, I thought of a student that would benefit from reading one of Julia Cook's book.

So many of my students struggle with social skills like tattling, responding to "no", dealing with fire and tornado drills, and safety on the playground. All of these things are targeted in her books and in a fun way!

I plan to create lessons around these books to teach specific skills and then read the books to my students any time they need them. They might need to hear "I'm Not Scared, I'm Prepared" to help them deal with an upcoming drill or "My Mouth is a Volcano" to understand how another might feel due to their actions. These books will help teach my students empathy, compassion, and help them develop positive peer relationships.
