This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach language arts to a group of third through fifth grade students who are avid readers. When you walk into my classroom, you can see students engaged in reading varied texts at their levels while also working on refining skills that target areas of literacy, their learning plans, their communication abilities, and even their specific interests.
Imagine coming to school and having a diverse set of tools and resources specific to your needs and interests available to you.
I work in a school with a very high low-income student population in Chicago, Illinois. Many of my students have very limited resources in their own homes and are in constant need of ways to compensate for the things that they lack access to. Like many urban public school students, they just need access to the tools that promote literacy and lifelong reading.
My Project
While engaged in the reading of a novel as a class, I look for various ways for students to respond to the text. These responses could be expressed verbally in discussions, in writing, or through artwork. By bridging reading literature and responding through art, students are encouraged to create a piece that expresses their understandings, opinions and feelings. I need lots of art supplies in order for students to create masterpieces that allow them to fully express their responses to the literature that we are reading. A basic supply that we always need is paper-lots and lots of paper.
More than half of students from low‑income households
