The majority of the students in my school are from low-income families. 100% of the students in my class receive free lunch or receive lunch at a reduced price. This year, 50 percent of my students have an Individualized Educational Plan due to a learning disability of some kind and I also have 3 students who are English Language Learners(ELLs). It is my goal to provide a learning environment that gives all my students an equitable opportunity to experience success.
These impoverished, but motivated learners are a joy to work with and I am excited to share my love of mathematics with them.
Some of the challenges many of my students face is the fact that they have a short attention span and the tendency to lose focus and get off task if the work presented to them seems too difficult. I believe that if I find a way to engage all the senses then they will learn to persevere and ultimately prove that they too can be great problem solvers.
My Project
My students will benefit greatly if we have access to iPads and headphones to enrich their learning experiences through audio-visual presentations and virtual learning tools.
The resources I am requesting will be used by my students every day to enhance their learning, build their understanding and improve their number sense and fluency skills rendering them competent with the content taught on a daily basis.
The students will use the iPads on a rotational basis to conduct mathematical investigations with a partner. The headphones will be used to listen individually and quietly to the customized lesson videos I will create to support their conceptual understanding of the mathematical content.
Students will also have access to a plethora of interactive online resources to help them learn math in a fun and interesting manner. These tools will help my students to interact with each other as well as explore and learn mathematics at their own pace. They will also have the ability to review, practice and listen to the lesson presentations as often as they deem necessary.
I am confident that providing my students with a math learning center equipped with audio-visual tools and tactile rich, hands-on materials that engage all the senses: eyes, ears and hands, will support and enhance the learning experiences in my classroom. These resources will help to increase student engagement, develop their interest in the learning of mathematics, and lead to a positive change in the mindset and self-confidence in all my students.
