Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many students have difficulty with mathematics and particularly with algebra because it is presented in ideal situations rather than real scenarios. Students working on mathematics projects find learning more interesting and meaningful.

I have seventh graders attending a school where most of the student body is on the federal free lunch program.

They enjoy doing the projects presented in my class where they have an opportunity to show their creativity and express themselves. Using tools such as our SMART board, responders, and graphing calculators has given them opportunities to learn because they provide the instant feedback that has become a necessity for today's learners.

My Project

For this project, my students will take pictures of buildings, objects, and anything on campus, their home or the neighborhood that will be then described using algebraic functions. The students will start by inserting their pictures as the background of graph pages in the TI-Nspire handhelds available in class. They will then manipulate linear, quadratic, exponential, and other less frequently known functions for middle school students that will help them describe their pictures mathematically.

Many of my students came to my class having some experience in the use of Microsoft PowerPoint and Word to create presentations and reports.

I want all of them to leave my class knowing how to incorporate different resources to create multimedia projects with a Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics focus.
