My Students
My class is a self-contained class for young students with Autism. The curriculum is the standard curriculum for grade-level, regular education students.
All of my students have difficulty communicating their needs and wants appropriately.
They all learn well with music and love technology. Unfortunately, their teacher is not musically inclined at all! They are all developmentally delayed and have limited vocabularies. In addition, because of their autism, words do not always have meaning. Pictures and kinesthetic movements attach meaning to the words they hear.
My Project
My students need interactive and engaging ways to learn vocabulary and communication skills. They learn best with music and technology.
These learning materials will gain their attention and provide vocabulary and communication skills that will generalize to situations where they really need them.
Since my students have communication deficits, associated with their autism, words alone do not often hold meaning for them. But, words with music and action and pictures, together, give the words meaning. Giving meaning to the words we all speak and providing them with a way to communicate the things that they need and want, will improve the quality of their lives. It will give them a way to interact with others and to communicate how they are feeling, along with the things they need and want.
