This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a diverse first grade, integrated collaborative teaching (ICT) class, with a combined mixture of general and special education students at a large, high-needs, Title I school in the north Bronx. Although the majority of students come from low-income homes or from homes with limited parental involvement, they are enthusiastic and truly come to school every day ready to learn. These children see school as a consistent part of their daily lives and strive daily to make me proud.
My 24 first graders are some of the happiest children I have ever had the pleasure of working with.
Not only do several of them struggle with unstable home lives, but many cope with various disabilities, such as ADHD, autism, and speech and language impairments. These kids inspire me to provide the best education I can for them.
My Project
These Dr. Seuss books will enable my students to read books with high interest and low readability. There is such a push for students to become more fluent, and these books will help with my fluency instruction. Because Dr. Seuss uses so much rhyming and makes up his own words, it pushes my students to focus on decoding quickly, which helps in reading fluently. With these books, I will be able to model fluent reading and provide my students with time to practice fluent reading on their own. As a teacher, I have an obligation and a desire to make my students better readers. I need these resources to take on this task. These books will help me in reaching my goals as a teacher and my students' goals as readers.
