My students need a digital microscope to fully appreciate/understand the microscopic world we will be studying in our science curriculum.

My Students
Last year, when I taught my students about microorganisms, I was frustrated to find that my site only had a couple microscopes available. They were antiquated & roughly-treated to the point of being useless. With $30+ million in cuts over 2 years, our district has no money to spend on new equipment.
My diverse class of students are eager to learn, excited about science, and truly appreciative of anything they receive.
We are located in cash-strapped California in a district that has been affected by severe budget cuts. These cuts have resulted in major lay-offs, huge class-size increases, and a loss of all P.E. and music support staff. There is no money to buy supplies for our classroom beyond the barest of essentials. These cuts are effecting our students acutely.
My Project
The Ken-A-Vision Kena Digital Microscope is fantastic. It is a powerful, portable microscope that can be plugged into our computer's USB port to then project the images (in real-time) onto our Smartboard. It can be held up to an object students would like magnified or used like a standard scope on its base. In addition, it can be taken out into the field to record images and video that can be viewed later on the computer. It's heavy-duty with a simple design that can endure student-use. What ultimately sold me on this digital microscope was the video on the manufacturer's website that shows a Daphnia (a type of microscopic crustacean). The images are clear and bright and the magnification is just what I'm looking for in an elementary classroom. What better way to teach/learn about the world of microorganisms than to explore it ourselves with this wonderful tool!
Science out of textbook can quickly fall flat for 3rd and 4th graders.
Reading about the tools scientists use and seeing images on the page pales in comparison to USING those scientific tools and EXPERIENCING the discovery themselves. By supporting this project, you are supporting the experiences that can inspire future scientists. Thank you!
