"Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world" -Nelson Mandela. A typical day in my classroom can be challenging when my students lack basic needs such as pencils and sharpeners. I would like to provide my students with the materials that they need to be successful.
My school is a Title I school with 100% of our students receiving free breakfast and lunch.
My students live in an inner-city area where basic needs are difficult to meet, and therefore, they cannot solely focus on learning to the best of their ability. As a class, we need so much and need to let our creative juices flow. Although we might not come in with a lot of background, my students have a love of learning and learn best when they are presented with material in multiple ways. I feel that it is important to give them access to different resources and activities to help to meet their individual needs. Many of my students have challenges such as learning disabilities, ESOL students, or being hearing and visually impaired. Their assignments have to be more specialized in order to meet their needs.
Distance learning has its own set of challenges, but one needs creativity to figure out how to overcome obstacles as they arise. As a digital literacy teacher, my students have become fairly adept at using the iMacs in my classroom, but many of them are struggling with navigating on the Chromebooks they are using at home. Some of them are having trouble clicking and dragging using the touch pad, which requires a certain coordination. Activities such as coding pose a particular challenge for them.
USB mice and flash drives will assist my students in creating and saving digital projects in my online digital literacy classroom.
