I work with children from diverse cultures and backgrounds at a wonderful primary school in Fort Worth, Texas that serves approximately 800 Pre-K through second grade children. Over eighty percent of those children qualify for the reduced lunch program and live in nearby apartment housing. Most of them are handicapped by the lack of access to common technology in their own homes. I want to give my students opportunities to create with and explore computers, the Internet, digital cameras, and other types of technology. In order to meet this goal, another teacher and I are starting a Technology club at our school. Our first and second grade students will help design and maintain a web page for their club. They will make multimedia presentations to share in their classrooms and at school assemblies. They will learn the basics of digital photography and picture editing. They will also have opportunities to write simple computer programs. Students in our club will be able to go back to their own classrooms and be classroom computer experts. They will be able to assist their peers and teachers with different programs. Our school has been blessed with a wireless computer lab, which was obtained through a generous grant. Unfortunately, we have no easy way to save student work. We need 15-30 USB Flash Drives so students can save and share their projects. I am excited about this new club. I am excited to transfer my passion for learning and technology to these kids. I am excited to help equip them with knowledge and skills they will use for the rest of their lives.
