U.S. Newcomers Make First Visit to Science Museum!
My students need school bus transportation to the Science Museum of Minnesota. This is an all-school field trip, with 150 students new to the U.S., and 20 staff.

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our students are primarily newcomers to the United States and for the majority this will be the first visit to a science museum! The Minnesota Science Museum is fabulous, and is hosting two exhibits of prime importance to our population: "Nature Unleashed" about natural disasters, and "Identity."
Our students are all refugees and immigrants who are new to the United States.
Each year, newcomers arrive from war torn countries or impoverished regions experiencing famine or natural disaster. Many of the students have had little opportunity to attend school before and are just learning to read.
Despite extreme hardship, they are extremely motivated and hard-working, and as graduates overcome extreme difficulties to attend college, become lawyers, doctors or journalists. More than 95 percent are from low-income families with little money to purchase books.
My Project
Hands-on experiences and learning are highly effective for students learning another language. Seeing the exhibits of "Nature Unleashed," will be a wonderful way for them to acquire English vocabulary about concepts they are already familiar with. They will also see in an omnitheater movie about the Amazon. This will allow our students from around the world - Latin America, Asia and Africa -- to see, feel, touch and share their common experience..
These students in particular, who are new to the country and the culture, benefit immensely from seeing and visiting places outside the classroom.
