My scope of influence on my students is limited only to six short hours a day and five days a week. While I try my best to make every moment count, my students face many hardships.
My students are my inspiration.
My school is categorized in a "highest poverty" school district. Nearly all students qualify for the free lunch program, and many students live in a single-parent family. Despite facing these challenges, my students are hard-working and motivated to learn. They amaze me every day.
My Project
Like all teachers, I am dedicated to my students and to their education. The Coronavirus pandemic has interrupted the learning of hundreds of thousands of students across the country, and my students are among those who will miss out on weeks or, potentially, months of classroom instruction time. Unfortunately, the closing of schools will impact students in poverty-stricken areas the hardest; my students will be burdened the most. Many of my students do not have the technology at home that is necessary to continue learning remotely. It is unfortunate that in times like this, the divide between the haves and the have nots becomes wider and more apparent. The disparities between students and the school districts that can afford resources and those who cannot will prove to have a detrimental impact on the education of the disadvantaged. My fear is that my students will finish the school year behind by three months of missed instruction and will not be ready to begin the next school year.
The addition of Chromebooks for student use at home will make a substantial impact in the learning of my students.
This project will fund ten Chromebooks to loan to students while we are away from school. Ten will not be enough for everyone in need, but it will be a step in the right direction. Students who do not have devices to use at home will be provided with one if this project is funded. This way, students will be able to access our online learning platforms from home so that they will not be left behind while we are remotely learning.
